Harry Glickman Award
The MJCC selects two winners for the Harry Glickman Award each year. Any Jewish student athlete who has lived in Oregon for the past three years and is a junior or senior in high school is eligible. Two winners are selected and recognized at our Community Celebration. This award was established in 2012, in honor of Harry Glickman (z”l), the “father” of professional sports in Oregon. He was the founder of the Portland Trail Blazers, the Trail Blazers’ President from ‘87-’94 and the founder of the Portland Buckaroos. He is also a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Applicants are judged on academic and athletic achievement as well as their commitment to community service. Winners receive a $500 scholarship for college. Students can apply at oregonjcc.org/glickman

Oregon Youth Suicide Awareness Campaign – Article #2

There is no single cause for any individual suicide. Each person is different and factors that
contribute to a person’s suicide are unique to the individual.
However, we know there are many risk factors that contribute to suicide. These fall into three
general categories: health, environmental and historical.
• Health includes depression, substance abuse and other mental/behavioral health
conditions that make the individual more vulnerable.
• Environmental factors include issues that place stress on the individual that exceed his/her
ability to cope, such as parental divorce, a death in the family, or exposure to suicides of
others.
• Historical factors include exposure to the suicide of a family member or a family history of
suicide attempts.
Bullying
Environmental stressors and health also include bullying. While research has not established a
direct causal relationship between bullying and suicide, studies have shown that being a bully, the
victim of bullying, a person who bullies and is also a victim of bullying, or is an observer, increases
social isolation, withdrawal, depression and anxiety all - of which are involved in suicidal
behaviors.
Thomas Joiner has presented a theory of causes of suicide that includes a person’s sense of
belongingness and connectedness to friends, family and community. Clearly, bullying undermines
connectedness to the peer group and the school community, especially if allowed to continue over
time.
Being a witness to bullying increases risk for suicide, especially if the youth feels he/she should
have done something to intervene. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, “Youth who report both bullying others and being bullied (bully-victims) have the
highest risk for suicide-related behavior of any groups that report involvement in bullying.”
So how can adults intervene with bullying to reduce risks for suicide among perpetrators,
victims and observers?
• Recognize that bullying, being bullied and witnessing bullying are not a normal passage of
growing up and, in fact, can be risk factors for suicidal behavior.
• Adopt clear and definitive school policies against bullying so youth feel safe at school.
• Consider how your reactions to bullying can influence students’ sense of safety.
• Consider how responding exclusively with blame and punishment can misdirect attention from
getting help, support and treatment.
• After taking action, monitor the well being of victims, observers and bullies themselves. All
are at increased risk for suicide.
• Recognize hazing as a form of bullying that needs to be curtailed. It is not a normal function
of adolescent behavior to be taken lightly.
• Be aware that youth are keen observers and will model adult behavior.
• Understand that youth who witness bullying may feel complicit and guilty for not taking
action.
While schools can address bullying on campus, a large percentage of bullying occurs off campus
and via social media. In these instances, parents and community members in contact with youth
should be vigilant about social relationships and online activities to assess for bullying.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth are at high risk of bullying and their rates of suicide
attempts and completions also are significantly higher than other youth. Parental acceptance of
gender identity and sexual orientation is a protective factor, as are actions by adults to eliminate
bullying or assault against LGBT youth.

On behalf of the Executive Boards for the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) and the Oregon Athletic Directors Association (OADA), I would like to introduce to you the 2nd Annual OACA/OADA Coaches vs. Cancer Program. Because cancer has touched so many in our coaching community, Coaches vs. Cancer offers a unique opportunity to fight the disease. Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating schools can truly make a difference in the fight against cancer and raise awareness in their communities about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
The OACA & OADA would like for schools to choose either the week of January 23 - 27 or January 30 - Feb. 3 to promote Cancer Awareness throughout their community. There are various ways you can use your voice and leadership to help fight cancer. Each school’s Cancer Awareness Week should be structured to best fit their individual needs. Please see the attached flyer for program goals and activities that your school could participate in.
We would appreciate your support in seeing the information gets to the appropriate individuals in your school, whether it be the principal, student activities director, or winter coaches (Boys/Girls Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling).
If your school chooses to participate in a fundraising activity, you can donate the money raised in one of two ways:
1. You can donate to a local cancer program of your choice. We would appreciate knowing how much and who to so we can tally a total amount state-wide. Close to $8000 was raised last year!
2. Send the funds to the OACA office and all monies will be donated in a lump sum from the OACA/OADA to the American Cancer Society. Please have all monies to the OACA by Wednesday, March 15th.

The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) along with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), the Oregon Athletic Directors Association (OADA) and the Oregon Athletic Trainers’ Society (OATS) have joined forces this school year to bring about Youth Suicide Awareness in our state. High School Coaches and Athletic Trainers share a unique role in watching for signs of emotional distress in their student/athletes due to the relationships they share. Our goal is to promote and educate those who have direct daily contact with those who might have signs and symptoms that could lead to the risk of a suicide attempt. We would appreciate you sharing this email and attachment with your coaching staff, athletic trainer(s) and any other pertinent staff.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24 in our nation. In Oregon, it has been increasing since 2000, outpacing the national average in 2012 by 42 percent. I recently read that, “Youth Suicide is like a bomb. There is shrapnel and the closer you are to it, the deeper the wound. But it does not just affect those nearby, there is no one that is not affected.” If your school district has experienced a youth suicide in the past you know how true this statement is!
We plan on spreading awareness by providing to our Coaches and Athletic Trainers Youth Suicide Awareness articles throughout the school year with the initial article attached. It was written by Ann Kirkwood who is the Oregon Health Authority Suicide Intervention Coordinator. We are working with the Oregon Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in providing presenter(s) that will make two breakout presentations to our Athletic Directors at their April State Conference. That information then can be shared with each school’s athletic department personnel. Similar to our Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign in January (information to be shared by broadcast email, Thursday, Dec. 15) we will designate the month of May as Oregon High School’s Youth Suicide Awareness month. Individual schools and communities will provide opportunities for Youth Suicide Awareness to their students and staff. May was chosen as research shows an increase in Youth Suicide attempts in June and July. As Ann states in her articles the ultimate goal for the OACA, OSAA, OADA, OATS through our 2017 Youth Suicide Campaign is Zero Suicide in Oregon High Schools.
